September Veggie Checklist

A HOME GARDEN can provide a family with an abundant supply of high-quality vegetables, fruits, and herbs at low cost.

Herbs and vegetables are natural companions, in the sense that if you grow fresh herbs you’re bound to also love the idea of harvesting your own home grown tomatoes, beans, lettuce and anything else in season. We can dream after all!

September Checklist:

Sow summer season vegetables seeds in sutu – sweet corn, melons, cucumbers, squash, pumpkins, peppers, and green beans.  It is now safe to sow lettuce beets, carrots, radishes, dill, cabbage , broccoli and celery.  Be careful to only cover these varieties of seeds lightly with soil during the planting process.  Carrots, radish and dill must be sown directly into beds as they are not recommended for transplanting.

Plant out seasonal seedlings – eggplants, peppers, tomatoes, spinash, chillies and sweet basil.  Spinach, beetroot, lettuce, bush beans, eggplant, chillies, cabbage and leeks are compact growing vegetables and veggies like lettuce, beetroot and spinach can be used as borders.  Chillies also make beautiful pot plants.

Sow new plantings of quick-growing herbs like coriander, mustard and watercress.  Herbs and vegetables do best if grown in a sunny position.
